IN A RECENT issue of one of my newspapers I saw an article about “Neutercanes.” I says to myself, “Oh, oh, women’s lib again.” As it turned out it was about storms that are ordinarily too weak to be designated by sex. It is assumed that the big ‘her-i-canes’ will continue to bear appellations designating them as female. Too bad, ladies are such gentle folk (most of the time) and hurricanes are so fierce; and I have always thought they were just in a hurry to get somewhere.
Recently our pastor preached a good sermon, as usual. He made the statement that the church is the bulwark, even though the Christian Church is in the minority. Of course he had to tell us that a bulwark is a kind of barrier, or a protection; in the case of the church from evil. I don’t know if he noticed me trying to suppress a grin, but the word ‘bulwark’ reminded me of a story about an orator dedicating a new school.
