THERE’S SOMETHING to be said for not passing laws if there’s not enough enforcement muscle to enforce those laws. There’s also a great deal to be said in favor of any action by government, at any level, which tends to discourage the creation of still another bureaucratic apparatus.
But having said these things, we still wonder about the action of the Board of Supervisors at their November meeting which tabled, indefinitely, any consideration of an electrical code for Rappahannock County.
The majority attitude seemed to be one of caveat emptor — let the buyer beware. “...Let each person be on his own, and if he puts up a house where the wiring is such that he burns down his house, then it’s his loss.” That statement may correspond with some old-fashioned ideas about “rugged individualism,” and all that, but it’s hardly consistent with up-to-date concepts of a government’s responsibilities to the people within its jurisdiction. ,
