TWO BOYS WERE ARGUING. I was not close enough to hear the conversation, but suddenly one said: “I hate you!” The other replied: ‘‘That is your probleum, you will have to live with it.” Whether it was a proble-um or a problem of the hater, it gave me food for thought. How much energy is expended in feeding the fires of hate, is it more easy to hate than to love?
Recently our paster took his text from the First Letter of John in which the writer says that one who loves his brother is in the light, that one who hates his brother is in darkness; that there are no shadings of grays in between. Can that be true? Are there not variations of love, do we have to love or hate? God forbid. I know some people that I might love in an abstract way, I wish them well but I rather love them from a distance.
This thought just occurred to me, if you must love or hate, could you use a negative approach and say to a friend: “I don’t hate you.”
