A class by himself

WHEN YOU HEAR THE WORD “athlete,” somehow you think of physical power and skill. The real meaning has a lot more to do with the mind and spirit that controls that physical tool called a body. Sports^ provide a great testing ground for this control, a place where a person can go looking for his limits and, sooner or later, find them.

Charlie Thomas is in his last year at Rappahannock County High School. For two years he has been running, alone and with others, striving for speed and the limits of his desires and abilities. Every time he thought that he had found those limits, they increased and he grew better at his sport.

These that knew him well — his teammates and his coach — have seen him grow from a quiet, almost shy boy that no one knew, into a still quiet but confident, dedicated and ambitious young man. Through his own efforts, -guided by his fine coach, he has tried to reach his athletic potential. He hasn’t quite found those limits yet. Instead, whether he knows it or not, he has found a secret. The more he tries, the more he can do.

Charles Thomas has run a lot of races for Rappahannock and for himself. And when his last cross country race ended, there was Charlie, like so many other times, running strong, out in front, in a class by himself. — Roger Flinchum □
