VIRGINIA ELECTRIC and Power Company for the past several weeks has been contacting Rappahannock landowners along the route of its proposed 500,000volt transmission line and, so far, failed to buy the first right-of-way easement.
According to landowners approached by the company’s right-of-way agent, .offers of between $800 and $1,400 per acre have been made for only the 150foot wide corridor. Vepco had not offered any amount for the damage to the remainder of the property.
“Vepco has the statutory right to try to purchase property or easements,” said Phil Irwin, President of the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection. “But it can’t force landowners to sell out and it couldn’t get very far condemning land without a State Corporation Commission Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity.”
