Tennis tourney
PLANS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED for this year’s running of the Twenty-fifth Annual Rappahannock County Invitational Mixed Doubles handicap Whistle - cup Tennis Tournament, Mrs. N.K.G. Tholand has announced.
Mrs. Tholand, chairman of the event, anticipates 24 teams this year. Quarterfinals will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday, September 2, at the courts of Judge and Mrs. Raynor Snead, Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Parrish, Mr. and Mrs. James J. Kilpatrick, and at Piedmont, the Tholand estate. The semi-final and final matches will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, Labor Day, at the Kilpatrick court near Woodville.
Committee chairmen include Mrs. Fanning Baumgardner, Food Committee; Judge Snead, Credentials Committee, and Ian Pryde, Arrangements Committee.
The tournament is always known as the “twentyfifth annual tournament,” Mrs. Tholand explained, partly because no one can remember when the first tournament was held, and “twenty-five seems a good, round number.” Mainly, however, it is because “most of the players are as ageless as Rappahannock County, and there’s no point in growing old.” C
