VIRGINIA LAND USE taxation enabling legislation will be the topic of a meeting set for 8 p.m. Friday, December 7, by the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection.
Explaining the subject will be Dr. Paxton Marshall, Extension Specialist on Public Policy at Virginia Polytechnic Institute: Dr.. Marshaif spoke at similar meetings prior to enactment of land use taxation in neighboring Fauquier County, and nearby Loudoun, and he is considered one of the state’s most knowledgeable persons in this field.
Under land use, qualifying properties can be assessed for taxation purposes based on their use, rather than their market value. For example, land which meets certain standards set by a state committee can be designated as agricultural, horticultural or forest land. In some instances, land can receive a lower assessment simply by qualifying as open space. A farmer’s house and the lot it stands on, however, would continue to be assessed at market value.
All interested persons are invited to attend the meeting, with a special encouragement issued to RLEP members.□
