Land use taxation
COUNTIES ALL AROUND Virginia have been looking with increasing interest at land use enabling legislation, especially as increasing market pressures serve to increase, the tax load on farm land. Counties nearby—Fauquier, Loudoun and Prince William—have actually adopted land use tax relief, despite some grumbling and a great deal of confusion.
It’s worth looking into in Rappahannock, too, and the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection is to be commended for bringing Dr. Paxton Marshall of VPI here on December 7 to talk about what is involved. Dr. Marshall is one of the most informed persons in Virginia on this subject, and his help was invaluable when both Fauquier and Loudoun were considering adopting the legislation.
We would only caution at this juncture, where the broad concept is being considered in Rappahannock, that the purposes of land use legislation not be misconstrued. The purposes, which the General Assembly deemed “irtthepublic interest,” are spelled out quite clearly:
