It is rare to find in one person

both the strength to persevere against a daunting personal challenge, and the strong desire to continue to serve others. Claudia Mitchell, howevpr, has battled a serious illness and has never wavered in her commitment to her community and friends.

Claudia - as her friends describe her - is a bold and persevering character, but this was always leavened with a sense of fun and even a little silliness at times, like the “Toodles” sign off from every phone call.

Since her first days in Rappahannock, she has contributed immeasurably to the (, county and the Town of Washington. «

The Rappahannock News salutes Claudia Mitchell as its 2008 Citizen of the Year.

Claudia has served on the Washington Town Council for the past six and a half years, as president of the Rappahannock Association for the Arts and Community for the past six years, and on the board of the Friends of the Library. It was her vision that created the highly popular RAAC Artists' Tour which brings 4,000 tourists on a November weekend each year.
