Julie Portman, 67, of Washington, Va., passed away just before the Solstice on Dec. 21 at home.
Julie was involved in the professional theatre since 1966 as a playwright, director, performer, and teacher. Her play "Riot” won the New York Obie award for the best play of 1971. Her body of work includes 10 full-length plays.
After receiving both an MFA and MA in theatre from the University of Wisconsin, she founded Theatre Workshop Boston, Theatre on the Wharf, Om Theatre, and Ki Theatre in Washington, Va., where she was Artistic Director from 1985 until February 2008.
A consummate creator, Julie followed her muse, never c6ntent just to keep performing what already was successful. Walking out of a flourishing theatre career in 1972, she traveled to India on a Fulbright grant and discovered Kathakali Theatre. She studied in the traditional way for years as the only student and disciple of one of the last great Kathakali masters. The work in India changed her life—artistically and spiritually - on every level. Her story in India is the basis of her new play, “The Man Who Eats Books,” which she finished in the days before she died.
