She created community wherever she went, whether it was the movable community of workshops and festivals or the deeply rooted community of Ki Theatre. With Ki she developed 22 years of community programs based on her belief in the power of story. Her Life Stories Workshops inspired thousands of people to create artistic work using stories from their own lives. These stories became the seed for plays, readings, songs, and poetry performed by members of the community.
A deep listener, a sublime coach, and a profound teacher, she believed that creativity is the greatest power in the world. She inspired and cheered on countless artists, including her own husband, musician and composer Paul Reisler, who credits her as the muse for his acclaimed Kid Pan Alley children’s songwriting project, as well as hundreds of his own songs.
Her own stories became the plays that she and Reisler performed thousands of times throughout North America, Africa, Asia, and India—“Katie Malone,” “How Dad Cheated the World,” and “My Sister’s Sister." The stories of three women survivors of terrible violence became the grist for her “Three Roses.”
