Some time before this season was over I had become Interested financially and otherwise in a scheme to take the Chicago team and another picked nine from among the best league players on an exhibition tour to Australia and New Zealand. A. G. Spalding was first to suggest the matter to me, and from the start it appealed strongly to rny love of adventure. Mr. Spalding looked into the plan very critically from a business point of view, and the more he studied it the better it seemed to him. Finally we agreed to go into it, and after the matter was decided I could hardly wait for the time to come. The management of the trip-and all the details fell to Mr. Spalding and Leigh S. Lynch, who had been In Australia in connection with the theatrical business and had a wide acquaintance in the antipodes. In February Mr. Lynch went to Australia to make the necessary arrangements for our appearance in that country.
