On the home farm where from eight to twelve horses are kept it is our practice to keep but one team of mature geldings. These are used for winter chores and for such emergencies as require supreme effort at times when a m^re heavy in foal would be injured by hard pulls. The rest of the work animals are brood mares and colts not yet mature enough for market. It is our rule to keep at least six regularly -breeding mares. In the last five years we have averaged four live colts per year at weaning time from the six mares. At three or four years of age these colts sell for around $500 a span.
