Cthe lust two years an interesting con troversy has arisen over the growth of midget sports in the United States. By midget sports, we mean all organized sports for youngsters twelve years of age and un iter. In 1950, thp National Recreation Asso ciation Congress set up a committee from the recreation field to formulate principles of guidance to be followed by community recreation leaders. This committee of twenty-three mem bers met the next year and, in 1952, the committee released a number of conclusions and suggested principles concerning highly organized, competitive sports for young sters twelve and under. The committee found that sports for those under twelve years of age should not be “highly organized, competitive athletics.” The committee considers any athletic ac tivity which involves a considerable amount of leisure time, of the youngsters, spent in formalized practice; or encourages large scale attendance by adults; or is limited to the best players, and involves a selection of winners on state, regional or national sche dules, highly crganized.
