Marginal Members Of Beef, Dairy Herd Cause Income Drop Check beef cow herds to see if some culling is in order. That's the advice to beef cattle producers in southwest and j southern Virginia from Curtis } Mast, associate animal husband- j man at VPI. Mr. Mast says culling out mai ginal cows is the best way to conserve feed this winter. Ani mals which should be culled in clude over-aged cows which take a lot of feed to winter and which are hard to keep up; poor milk ers; off-colored cows, such as; roane cows in Hereford herds or white-faced cows in Angus herds. Off - colored calves brought around $14 a head less than did the straight - colored calves on 1 1952 markets. Also, cull cows with dairy breeding. Most of the time they produce medium grade calves, and in most of the calf sales in i952. mediums brought about $25 per head less than did the good and choice calves. There was a time when it was profitable to keep tows with dairy breeding, because prices were high and as long as they bore marketable calves they earned their keep. With the drop in cattle prices, this is no longer true.
