Yep, it’s been a hard year.”

“Cauliflower is nothing but cabbage with a college education.” (That is not mine; Mark Twain penned it.) I wanted to put that in the paper last year when some of the citizens of the county were freezing cauliflower, canning cauliflower, eating cauliflower, and giring cauliflower to the hogs— the rest they just threw down the hill—but it was a touchy subject at the time and was best left alone. There were a few youngsters in a few families, no doubt, who would have read the lines and thought them extremely funny. But I love children, and I would have hated to think that upon me would rest the blame for what would have happened when they quoted the “funny” lines at an inappropriate hour; i.e., for instance, after ma had finished a full day of worrying with all the excessive and too numerous cauliflower, or at an hour after pa had spent a back-breaking day putting rubber bands around the danged things.

Rappahannock News:
The opinions of certain persons, quoted in your editorial last week to the effect that the schools do not produce sufficiently and that comparisons of present day education results with those of former days are odious, and the thought that the inadequacy of the schools is not the buildings but the quantity and quality of instruction, is a reflection, not only on the public school teachers of Rappahannock County, but also on the graduates of the schools of the past several years.
For the information of those who desire the truth, let us examine the products. It is difficult to find anything odious in a comparison of the success of the folwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiyyym
