Brooke Roberts Miller

Brooke Roberts Miller, of “Green' wood," died Thursday, January 28, at his home after a short illness. Mr. Miller, 88 years of age, was .the son of the late Dr. David Darius Miller and Elizabeth Williams Miller and was born at their home, “Alta Vista,” November 22, 1864. He attended , private schools in Rappahannock, among them "The Hokzman School" and Winchester (Academy in Frederick county. When very young, he united with the Sperryville Baptist church and at his death was the oldest member. On September 20, 1889, he married the lovely May Menefee, daughter of Henry L. Menefee and Roberta Holland Menefee of Sperryville. She died January 28, 1941. Mr. Miller is survived by five children, all living in Rappahannock county: Brooke Menefee Miller, Henry Lloyd Miller, D. Jackson Miller, Mrs. Wade H. Massie, Jr., and Mrs Bertie Lib Moffett. There are six grandchildren: Brooke Roberts Miller, Wade H. Massie III, James Fletcher Massie, Thomas B. Massie, Mrs. W. G. Eastham and Dr. Brooke Miller of Norfolk.

There are four great-grandchildren: W. G. Eastham Jr., Lizzie Fletcher Eastham, Roberta Eizabeth Moffett, and Wade Walahan Massie. Mr. Miller was considered one of the best farmers in Rappahannock and always took a keen interest in county affairs, at one time serving on the Board of Supervisors and as it’s chairman.

Mr. Miler was the last of his immediate family. His only sisetr, Mrs. McCall Boulware, of Fredericksburg, died several years ago, as did two of his brothers, Dr. G. Brown Miller of Washington, D. C, and J. James Miller of “Hawthorne.” His youngest brother, D, Lyle Miller, died March 6, 1952.

“Cousin Brooke (and his wife) Cousin May” as they were affectionately called by a large family connection and many friends were both endowed with rare personal charm * and to those who were privileged to see them together in their home, surrounded by their children, they became a symbol of all that was happy, beautiful arid wholesome in married life.

Impressive graveside services were conducted on Friday, January 30, at 10 a.m. at the family burying ground by his pastor, Rev. A. Paul Thompson.

Active pallbearers were Silas D. Miller, G. Brown Miller, D. D. Miller, G J. Miller, Robert M. Menefee, J. W. Fletcher, Lee Thornton, and D. Lyle Miller, Jr. •

Among those from a distance here for the services were Mr. and Mrs. G. Brown Miller Jr., of Washington, D. C., Dr. and Mrs. Brooke Miller Moffett of Norfolk, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Sanford of Orange, Mr. and Mrs. Silas Miller and son, John of Culpeper.

MISSIONARY SOCIETY

Mrs. W. C. Campbell entertained on Tuesday afternoon the Lou Keyser Missionary Society of the Washington Baptist church. Mrs. Campbell was in charge of the .program. The subject was "Winning the Mormans to the Right Way.” Mrs. John A. Keyser gave a report on “From where they came and the origin of their religious belief.”
