Up in New England, a gusty battle of words has been raging over which town of Washington came first Washington, Conn, which has about 2300 inhabitants, celebrated its 175th birthday on Jan. 7 last. It commemorated the occasion by announcing that it was the first community in the United States to be named after George Washington. The story, innocently carried by the national news services, touched off a battle of the Washingtons. Washington, N. H., claimed itself three years older, and unquestionably, “the first.” This claim was backed up by the State’s Governor Hugh Gregg and other dignitaries. They lined up to denounce the Connecticut community “-as—an mtgrlnpinfz,.. young whippprsnapper of a town.
So far, Washington, D. C. and Washington, Pa., have remained peaceably on the sidelines, but who kno^s when they are liable to jump into the fray. After all it’s not a private fight.
There is one place, however, which has rumbled some dignified scorn for Washington, Conn., founded in 1779 and Washington, N. H., started in 1776.
That is Washington, Va., (population 249), which is located in Virginia’s Rappahannock County, about 80 miles southwest of the U. S. capital.
When it gets its Dixie danger up, Washington, Va., will fight, bleed and die for the honor of being known as the first. It regards towns begun in 1776 and 1779 as callow, unbearded youths among the Washingtons.
