The entire population of Washington, Va., from the oldest gaffer to the newest baby, will inform you that George Washington laid out the general outline of a town at a level place on a hillside, and that Lord Fairfax named it in honor of his youthful surveyer.
However (and this part they don’t advertise), there wasn’t anything there but survey stakes when Washington finished his chore. Things ate a little vague about how soon thereafter the first settlers came to live in the place. But it was not until 1796 that the Virginia Legislature officially organized it and established it as a town.
