SEN. DOUGLAS BLASTS ADMINISTRATION Senator Paul H. Douglas (D111.) yesterday berated the Eisenhower Administration for the Continuing drop in farm income and advanced four “suggestions” for checking further declines. . The Illinois economist, who has been under fire from Republicans as a “prophet of doom,” told a 90minute press conference* he is making no predictions on the economic future. "Unless things improve (on the farm front), the Republican Party will be brought to a just accounting. The American people will strike a balance between Republican promises and performance. , Douglas added: “The judgments of a just God are likely to be severe.”

The former University of Chicago professor used a series of economic 'indices to show that farm prices have been going down steadily since the GOP Administration was voted into office in Nov. 1952. He displayed a chart showing that stock market prices rose 70 per cent over the same period.

Douglas’ four “suggestions” for reversing the farm price decline were these:
0 Distribute America’s topheavy farm surpluses both to needy people in this country and to hungry populatioin* elsewhere in the world.
0 Adopt a more liberal international trade policy: “If we take in more imports we can export more farm goods.” (Specifically, Douglas criticized Mr. Eisenj bower’s increase in tariffs on watches, on bicycles.)
0 “Swap” American farm surplusage for increased supplies of basic metals from abroad. For example, trade wheat and powdered milk to Bolivia for tin and to Southeast Asia for manganese.
