Look for continued gradual declines in hog prices as the fall run of hogs comes to market in increasing numbers.
Virginia’s auction average was off 25 cents last week to $16.50, with Richmond off 50 cents to $16.50 to $17, Baltimore off a I'ttle at $17.25, and midwest markets off 25 to 75 Cents, topping around $16.
Hog prices probably will continue down until November, but a new report on hog numbers in nine principal Midwest producing stares indicates a little improvement in December and January.
The report shows an 11 per cent increase over last year in hogs coming to market between now and December, but only a four per cent increase in hogs to be marketed in December and January.
Midwest fanners said they planned to farrow two per cent fewer sows from December to February, indicating a better supply picture come spring.
CATTLE ■ It is still good advice to unload all types ©f cattle that are ready for market.
Prices are still good, but they are beginning to slip in almost all categories.
If you are thinking about getting back into the beef business when others are getting out, there are good beef-type heifers at the current feeder calf sales priced at $16.50 to $18.
These heifers are moving well, and a number of them are going ' back to Virginia farms for breeding.
