in me second grade, Mrs. Leonard carries on the growth of the vocabulary. Also, the transition from printing to writing takes place during this year. And spelling comes into the picture. In this year, the child is given more attention in letter recognition, for his spelling. And here we must cement the transfer of the form or shape of the printed word to the written word. The class library with its additional vocabulary, words which must be made up from the small limited shape words, enters during the second grade.

In the third grade, Mrs. Cox explained, she enlarges the printed vocabulary to over 1000 words. And at this point of their instruction the pupil meets phonetics for perhaps the first time. The ability to make sounds' of the individual letters is very important. From the shape of words, to the composition of words, the child has come a long way. The advantages of the phonics on the shape words were in the ability to read more words sooner. This encourages the child by giving him a stronger foothold earlier.
