The fact that Mr. Eisenhower has increased the proposed Federal spending, when the hope was for reductions, has brought disturbed comments from quarters friendly to his Administration. When t h q budget estimates were made public, the Wall Street Joupnel reported, in part:
“Next fiscal year, the present Administration is embarking on still greater spending programs for civilian items— housing, schools, hospitals, highways, public works, farm subsidies and other schemes that are supposed to appeal to the voting public. •
For these and other domestic spending plans, Mr. Eisenhower proposes to spend more than Mr, Truman ever spent, except for two fiscal years just before the Korean War broke out in 1950. Mr. Eisenhower’s proposals are beginning to rival Mr. Truman’s peak civilian bugets for each of these * two years.”
