Figures released by the Virginia Division of Forestry show that of the 1,861 aeres of land burned by forest fires in the Northern Piedmont District in 1955,one acre was ' burned in Rappahannock County. A total of one fire occurred in the county, and the average fire burnt 1.00 tccres. These figures compare with a total of 223 fires, with an average size of 8.35, acres for the sixteen county district.
Brush or debris burners and smokers were the principal causes of forest fire, but hunters were also we irresponsible for a large number, particularly in November and December. The dry weather during the fall and winter, along with the carelessness of a few hunters, causeck a sharp increase in the number ofVfires during this period,. Growing concern has been expressed^ in mis unexpected increase'in hunter-caused fires.
