THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN
The unfortunate rift that has developed in Anglo-American affairs comes as a surprise to. most Americans. President Eisenhower stated that the United Nations was the proper medium for corrective action in the Suez crisis. Tile British Government was fully advised of our opposition to unilateral intervention, and promised to consult with us before taking any overt steps. When the Suez embers flamed into open warfare between Jew and Arab, the Israelis were doing fine against Nasser’s forces, without outside help. Yet in the face of all this, and without consulting the United States, Prime Minister Eden sent British troops, planes and ships ro attack the Egyptians and secure the Suez Canal. French forces also attacked but the lead was clearly British, and without them, France , would haye done nothing. If, therefore, Britain acted on her own, and the results of her actions were catastrophic, she was, after all, the author of her own injury. Why should the British turn on us with bitter deenunciation of our failure to go along with their Near East policy?
