Let*8 Screen All Refugees In U. S.

The Swiss government h«s announced that it is carefully screening all Hungarian refugees seeking a haven in the Alpine republic. Of the 6,000 granted permanent asylum thus far, only one has been turned back as a Communist agent. He was identified as sUch by some of his Hungarian compatriots. No doubt the Communist secret police look upon the entry of these Hungarian refugees into Western nations as a rare opportunity to augment their fifth column overseas. The Nazis and the Communists, too, have in the past proven the value of a well-organized. well - disguised network orf *P'CS- . _ ' ’

According to Associated Press reports from Vienna, die United States is shortening its security check on Hungarian refugees coming to this country.

This would be dangerous, shorty-sighted policy.

It should not be made easy for -^secret Communist agents to infiltrate the United States, perhaps to lie dormant for years, become accepted as respectable citizens and even rise to positions of influence before'being called upon to perform a single piece of espionage or sabotage at the critical moment. r The United States consulate in Vienna is issuing visas to 400 " Hungarian refugees daily and the number may soon be increased. . We doubt if adequate machinery is available for thorough security lr
