number of persons in the woods will greatly increase, will normally result in an outbreak of forest fires. An abnormally heavy fall of leaves in the woods, and a lush growth of small weeds and grasses along roadsides, have added to the fire danger.
The Virginia Division of Forestry officials urge everyone to use the utmost caution in handling fire during the coming hunting season and throught the fall. The danger of hunter caused fires from cigarettes, matches, and warming fires is high, but they can be prevented by the hunter making sure that all fires are out. Other causes of fall fires are those which escape from brush and trash burning. All fires should be watched until they are completely out and Virginia law requires that all fires within one hundred fifty feet of woodland brushland, or dry grass leading to woodland must be attended until thty are totally extinguished.
