Seedlings Delayed
The forest tree seedling nurseries at Charlottesville end in New Kent County will begin tree seedling distribution to planters on Monday, December 17, State For-, ester George W. Dean announced. This is about two weeks later than the biginning of tree planting last year.
A careful inspection of the millions of little trees reveals that, due to the recent wet and warm weather a large percentage of them are still growing. In this condition the tops are tender and terminal buds are not completely formed. The State Forester explained that experience has shown that when seedlings are planted in this condition the percentage of survival after planting is low. Only cold weather will terminate growth ar\d cause the seedlings to harden to a point they can be successfully moved.
State Forester Dean expressed regret for the delay in making the tree seedlings available but pointed out that weather conditions are the controlling factors. Tree planting season will run from December 17 to April 1 in eastern Virginia, except during freezing weather. Experience proves that seedlings cannot be successfully moved and transplanted during freezing weather.* or when the ground is frozen. In the mountains planting season is generally from mid-February until early April.
The nursery inventory indicates that approximately 28 million seedlings will be available to planters during the current planting season.
