Each cow owner will select the eterinarian of his own choice, and he wiill be paid from Federal funds. At the same time the veterinarian is at the farm, he will Bangs vacciinate, with cost to the owner, any heifer calves from 4-8 months of age which are to be kept for herd replacement.
In Rappahannock County there were 3935 cows Bangs Rested through October of this year which represented 51.5 of the total cow population. According to information from the state veterinarian’s office, only 35 Bangs reactors were found. During the same period last year, only 1532 cows had been tested. The goal set by the County Extension^ Livestock Committee was 60^?*>of the cows tested. With work done in November, yet to be tabulated, this goal may have been reached.
On the other hand, we are far from reaching the goal with resnect to heifer Bangs vaccinations. We have vaccinated but 456 heifers during the same period, which is>' almost 200 fewer head than a year ago! The vaccination of heifers against; Bangs disease is the best protion, and costs the owner nothing other than his time to get up the heifers.
