The Northern Virginia Power Company is distributing numerous free posters to schools of this area warning children to exercise caution while flying kites and model airplains. Home Service Advisors for the utility will follow up the poster distribution with a visit to the schools urging students to support the “Fly Kites Safely” Campain.
The posters point out the dangers of the kites and planes coming in contact with electric high tension wires.
I’tilitv Company Safety Director Raymond Heard states that there are still many tragic accidents reported each year, resulting from carelessness in flying kites and model planes. Fatalities are. numerous and severe burns often are suffered when necessary precautions are not heeded, he said.
The school posters point out various recommendations for ** children to follow: they should keep kites and planes from electric wires, use only dry cotton string on kites and under no conditions should anyone climb a utility pole to release kites or planes entangled on the wires. Since it is necessary to use wire for flying powered model planes, they should be taken to an area where there is no danger of coming in contact with electric wires.
According to Heard, “communik ties, hospitals and factories that depend on continuous electric service often are inconvenienced bv mishaps which occur from careless kite and model airplane flyers. Meta! wires from these crafts become entangled in electric wires and may cause costly damage> through the elimination of power to all types of establishments and homes, in addition to inflicting severe burns upon, or causing the ideath of the youngsters flying them.”
