falfa hay removes 45 pounds of potash.YVith a four ton per acre yield, 180 pounds of potash are removed from the soil. Virginia soils generally are low in potash and can not furinsh potash in this quanity, so it must be supplied in fertilizer. Phosphate needs are not as great, but phosphate must still be applied to meet the needs of a high yielding and vigorous alfalfa stand. A slight amount of boron should be applied in the fertilizer.
On the other hand, well inoculated alfalfa will furinsh enough nitrogen for its needs and also for the orchard grass in alfalfa-orchard grass mixtures.
In most instances a 0-1-2 ratio fertilizer, borated is the best to .select for alfalfa or alfalfa mixtures. When a soil test indicates a high or very high level of potash, a 0-1-1 ratio may supply ample potash. Use from 600 to 1000 pounds of a 0-10-20 borated fertilizer or the eqtiivalant each year to assure vour alfalfa is getting ample plant nutrients except when soil fertility conditions indicate another analysis is ‘more suitable.
You cannot expect alfalfa to yield at its high potential if vou do not supply the essential nutrients High yielding alfalfa is more economical to pdodime than low vield'ng stands. It is well to remember that when available plant nutrients are used tip the growth -ate slows and yields are low.
