Reflections On The Eisenhower Budget
For some time President Eisenhower has been telling Congress that it is impossible to cut one penny from his 72 billion dollar budget. This week we read that Dizzy Gillespie and his Be-bop orchestra have cost the American taxpayers oter $100,000.00 last year for their U. S. sponsored tour of Europe, representing American cultural attainments.
- There are three requirements for a Be-bop player: 1. He must wear a beret. 2. He must wear horn rimmed eyeglasses. 3. He must be able to honk a horn like an expectant duck startled in the act of laying an egg.
If Be-bop is‘representative of American cultural attainments. we accept the pity that be forthcoming from natives in the deepest heart of undeveloped Africa and Asia. Perhaps this will sta^t a Point 4 program in reverse, with those natives contributing funds to us to help develop, our retarded potentialities. Should Dizzy Gillespie have failed to accomplish this in 1956, no doubt the 1957 crop of horn tooters will hsve greater success, for the Eisenhower budget asks a 33% increase (a total of over $300,000.00) for their current activities overseas.
