One quarter pound of 2-4,D per acre applied to Wild Poppy at General Daniel C. Noec’s farm on March 5th, 1957 was 90 per cent effective. The application, made by Allan Kates, Weed Control Specialist of Virginia Tech, was purely a “shot-in-the-dark” as little research has been done in controlling the-pest.
Presently it is felt that one chemical treatment is not sufficient to eradicate this weed from croplands 'due to the tremendous amount of seed found in each pod. This treatment was applied to land seeded in barley which is to be* followed by Alfalfa. Since Alfalfa is also killed by 2-4,D seemingly there are two alternatives in keeping the weed supressed or possibly eradicating it, namely; (1) seeding the land back to small grain to allow a second application of the chemical or, (2) making the first cutting of Alfalfa before the poppy goes to seed however no observations have been made. by myself in comparing maturity dates of the two plants.
Both Diuron applied at the rate of 0.7 lbs. in 25 gallons of water per acre and C.I.P.C. at 2.5 lbs. in 25 gallons of water gave excellent results at the James E. Yates farm in controlling both common and mouse-eared chickweed in Alfalfa. The application was made December 20th with air temperature at 55-60 degrees, cloudv followed by rain within three hours of application. Dinitro also gave good results however thP chickweed was not matted.
At C. E. Johnson’s where common chickweed had formed a thick mat in thp Alfalfa C.I.P.C.
