Dr. Charles Jacob . Smith, a former President of Roanoke College, gave the initial sermon last Sunday evening and the feature singer was Mr. Nelson Huffman, Professor of Music at Bridgewater College and well known radio artist and singer of religions music.
As has, been the custom, Charles T. Chapman, Carillinneur of the Luray Singing Tower, gave a Karillon recital beginning thirty minutes prior to the services. On June 30th, Mr. Chapman’s recital began at 6:45 p.m. followed by the Vesper Service at 7:15. The Rev. T. Lee Richardson, Jr. pastor of the Main Street Baptist Church of Luray presided.
Dr. Charles Smith is a former President of Roanoke College and at the presrtit is Provost, a position created by the college in recognition of his great service to the institution. He is a former Lutheran Pastor and official of the Lutheran Church having been sent to France in 1918 as a Lutheran. Commissioner. In 1949, he was the first “Citizen of The Year" ever named by Southwest Virginia. Inc.
Among musical organizations scheduled for the Vesper Services of 1957 are the Potomac HandBell Ringers, the choir of the New York Presbyterian Church of Washington, and the choir of the Princeton Theoloeical Seminary. Among famed ministers will br Dr. Frank Laubach, Sr., Albert P. Shirkey and others.
