TV press reported recently that the Senate has approved a hill ■which would consolidate into a simple simplified law the great multitude of statutes which have to do with benefits for veterans and their survivors. The report said that the bill was sent back to the House for consideration of Senate adopted amendments to be minor and the prediction was that the House would concur.
The new bill would provide for all VA laws covering compensation, pension, hospitalization, medical and domiciliary care, and burial benefits to bbe reenacted into one new law. There would be no changes in eligibility requirements or payments, and there would be a few slight liberalizations for the purpose of making the law more uniform. Alcoholic.s and VA Hospitalization
Quite frequently the friends or relatives of a veteran call on this office to help obtain-hospitalization, to treat chronic or acute alcoholism. Usually there is nothing we can do because the VA will not hospitalize veterans for alcoholism alone. Hospitalization may be provided bv the VA onlv when the alcoholism is a contributory factor to medical complications, psychotic episodes, or when treatment is necessary to save the veteran s life.
Edward M. Mathews, of the Front Roval Office of the Division of War Veterans’ Claims, is in Washington at the Clerk’s Office on 1st and 3rd Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and will gladly give more details on this subject or any other matter connected with veterans affairs.
