The sheep breeding season is just ahead. Successful shepherds have shown a few steps taken now go a long way toward: insuring a short spread in lambing dates, which means fewer nights spent aiding thf stork or warming chilled Iambs comes next winter and fewer steps* in handling the flock comes the 19x8 marketing season. Briefly these steps in order are: individual dosing of ewes for internal parasite control, turning the flock onto clean fresh pasture, and two weeks later turning a GOOD purebred mutton type ram.
A simple way to determine whether the ram is settling his ewes properly is to use paint on his brisket applying it at two-week nfervals. A cheap and satisfactory paint- can be made by mixing in separate lots vellow ochre. Venetian red. and lamp black with used motor oil. Apply the different paints in the order listed. Be on the alert for repeaters. You can p- out a winters feed bill on a ewe th it has become ster-1 and 't could mean the difference of a l imb crop o*- none at all.
