Continued from page 2 alleged flagrant and frequent abuses of civil rights in the South, some of the Appropriations Committee members might have wondered why the Commission took the trouble to schedule hearings in such big cities of the North and West as New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. Dr. Hannah explained that the complaints from outside the South largely involved disc r i m in‘a t i on and segregation in' housing.
He acknowledged that his work on the Commission had made a. contribution to his knowledge of life in the South:
“Frankly, I was surprised and pleased at what we found in the housing area in Atlanta; there is a better opportunity provided for middle-class and high-class housing for at least some of these Negroe in Atlanta than in many dries in my part of the country.”
