It is interesting to note that in the same period, the • Commission received 60 complaints of civil rights violations in New York. State, 26 from Ohio, 25 from Pennsylvania, 45 from California, 25 from Illinois and 15 from the “Federal City” itself—the District of Columbia. The Commission reported that it had 73 persons on its payroll, including a staff d ir e c t o r at $22,500 a year, a deputy director at $15,392, and three other administrative persons at $$14,204 each. Dr. John A. Hannah, a Michigan educator and chairman of the Commission, recalled that the group had held hearings on voting rights in Montgomery, Ala.; hearings on housing in New“Yorlc City. Chicago, Los Angeles and Atlanta, Ga., and a conference on education in Nashville, Term.
The Commission also set up State advisory committees, “in all of the States except Alabama, Mississippi and South Carolina.
