The Virginia State - Department of Public Health has chosen the upper Shenandoah Valley for an intensive campaign against all type of accidents. The Valley area was chosen for the study because this area represents a cross section of “Anywhere”, U.SA. There is a balance of agriculture and industry, urban and rural residence and other conditions ideal for a pilot study of this type. The preliminary reports indicate that the type of accidents in this area are the same as the other areas throughout the country.
More than 6000 accidents of all types which required medical attention, were reported in the first six months of the Shenandoah Valley Accident Prevention Project which was inaugurated on July 1. 1958.
The study has its headquarters in Rockingham Health Center, but covers the counties of Rockingham, Rappahannock, Page, .Warren and Shenandoah. William Wild, M.D. is Health Director in the Harrisonburg - Rockingham County area and L. O. Fears, M.D. is Health Director of the Page, Warren, Rappahannock and Shenandoah Counties. Lewis G. Polk, Accident Prevention Consultant, and Richard E. Gallaher, Health Educator have been assigned from the U.S. Public Health Service to the Virginia State Department of Health to' carry out this project.
