Ln general, the communications 1 receive on this subject tell of steep, noisy dives and roaring low passes over farmsteads, shattering the equanimity of humans and livestock alike. The reports come in from various sections of the 7th Congressional Disrict, but have been, more frequent, in recent months, from Page, Rappahannock and Warren Counties.
While these unnerving manuevers occasionally may be executed out of mischief, the armed forces insist they are prepared to deal sternly with any pilot found to have taken it on himself to “buzz” a home, other building, vehicle on the ground, or farmer working his fields.- On the other hand, they acknowledge that low-level operations are performed as training exercises-'and must be continued in the interest of combat readiness.
Routes have been laid out for such flights to avoid metropolitan centers, and it happens that courses into our section have been in use.
Recently, I had occasion to check into reports of repeated low-level maneuvers along the Blue Ridge in Rappahannock and Page Counties. As jets were said to have been invoved, I queried the Air Force and Navy, and excerpts from their replies may be of interest.
From the Air Force:
“The Air Force operates a Iowaltitudes test route which passes near Liway in a southwesterly heading. However, that portion of the route has not beeen used since 1 July 1959.”
From the Navy:
“The Navy’s investigation has revealed that two jet attack aircraft were launched from the U.S. Naval Air Station Oceana, Va., on a low-level penetration training mission. These aircraft were scheduled to fly a designated routefor which a Federal Aviation Agency waiver had been granted. This route passes eight miles south of Washington, Va.; however, the aircraft may have been slightly off course at the time they passed die vicinity of Washington.
“The low-level penetration flight is an.essential phase of the combat training of a Navy pilot. The object of such a flight is to train the pilot to become proficient in low-level navigation simulating
