Civil War existed in Kansas until 1857 betvv'een the anti-slavery settlers and those who wished to have the Kansas territory admitted as a slave state.
In 1855 five of John Brown’s twenty children (he was married twice) were in Kansas to acquire homesteads. They wanted the territory to be a FREE STATE and were very bitter against those who favored slavery and wrote to their father to come out and help them fight those who opposed them.
He did so, enlisted and drilled a small body of malitia, then made war on his neighbors. In an attack on settlers along Pottawatomie Creek, five unarmed were slain. Guerrilla warfare broke out.
John Brown’s money gave out and he started.back East to visit abolitionist leaders. They supplied him with money and 200 Sharp’s rifles, supposedly for use in Kansas, but actually forearming an uprising in Virginia.
What manner of man was this John Brown, who soon was to terrorize the farmers around Harpers Ferry.to be captured, taken to Charlestown, tried and hanged ?
Historians have held different opinions, but on a number of things they are agreed.
In boyhood Brown was an abolitionist. He wandered from place to pface, a business failure every where, considered by his neighbors “no count”, and a little unbalanced. He was a sick old man who let rabid anti-slavery' agitators in the North make a tool of him. In other words, he was used by them to “do their dirty work;”
It is recorded that he conducted himself with dignity at his trial which was “scrupulously just”; that he was treated with consideration.
