The 21-year-old soldier, whose wife, Dorothy, is with him in Germany, was graduated from Rappahannock County IH'igh School in 1957 and was employed by the Maryland Drydock and Shipbuilding Company, Baltimore, Md. before entering the Army.
Richard V. Wayland, machinist’s mate second class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Earl Wayland of Sperryville, Va., took part in a joint Navy-Marine Corps exercise off the coast of Camp Lejeune, N. C., March 22-April 5, while serving aboard the destroyer USS English.
The operation known as “Lantphiblex 1-60”, was the largest amphibious exercise of the year and involved Second Division Marines from Camp Lejeune.
Purpose of the operation was to test the combat readiness of the Atlantic Fleer and the combat effectiveness of the Marine Corps’ latest developments in equipment and landing techniques.
