1 Some continuing government activities possess a vegetable-like growth which creates an area of rapidly increasing expenditures. The growth rate is currently about two billion dollars each year.
2. Commitments Uncle Sam has made for past services and future benefits have obliged the country to payment of an almost unbelievable total of $700 billion.
3 A huge part of the budget is made up of programs— defence is the biggest and best known—that probably must stay large for some time to come.
It should be no secret to anyone that few programs the federal government initiates these days are short-term operations- Almost every activity undertaken becomes a permanent fixture in some form. These fixtures have a way of swelling and crowding against each other and other parts of the budget, forcing the total ever higher.

This may be an impossible goal, especially during an election year, but the alternative is “grab-bag government and eventual bankruptcy. We can t go on milking the fed eral cow of more than we put into her. Few politiciaiMill have the gumption to own up to that truth this year, so we could help ourselves by tellling them every chance we get, and perhaps save the Republic in the process.
