Farm Census Report
The 1959 Census of Agriculture, conducted in Rappahannock County last fall, counted 497 farms, according to a preliminary report just issued by the Bureau of the Census, L'.S. Department of Commerce. Total land in farms was 103,177 acres. The average size of farm was 215.4 acres. The average value of farms (land and buildings) in the county was 24,411.
Of the county’s farm operators, 372 owned their farms, 81 owned part of the land and rented additional acreage, and 22 were tenant farmers.
The average age of farm operators in the county was 55.6 years. There were 135 farm operators 65 or more years of age.
Of the 479 farms in the county, 241 were commercial farms.
