News For Veterans
Emergency treatment of veterans in private hospitals may be paid for by the Veterans Administration only when the medical care is for a service-connected condition, and the medical emergency must have been such that an attempt to procure admission to a VA hospital would have endangered the life of the veteran. The VA may assume full medical responsibility in such Cases only if the emergency treatment is reported to the nearest VA hospital or office within 72 hours after the veteran’s admission to the private hospital.
Claims for unauthorized medical treatment may still be paid by the VA, even if the VA is not promptly notified of the emergency, if the veteran submits proof that the emergency required him to be taken to the nearest private hospital for treatment of the service-connected condition pnd he could not wait to be admitted to a VA hospital.
The VA cannot pay private hospital bills for veterans who elect to receive treatment in non-VA facilities as a matter of choice rather than necessity.
