In Appreciation

In the passing of Colonel William R. Williamson our community lost one of its finest.

Before I came to this part of the country I had often heard the phrase “Southern gentleman.” Not until I knew Bill Williamson did I realize what it really meant.

I recall asking him. when we first met, how he happened to settle here. He replied, very simply, “we are Virginians.” In his manner and tone 1 knew that he had said it all. Child of the South, he loved -the South, its people and traditions. He especially loved Rappahannock with its rolling terrain and ever-changing hills.

Bill’s courtesy was no veneer Probably from his long and distinguished career, in military and civil service, where he had to deal with both those to whom he reported and those who reported to him, he had gained a real undercould comprehend and acknowledge the basis for a differing point of view, the while yielding no part of )iis own convictions.
