CATTLE
Loo-k icr continued firmness in slaughter cattle prices for the next two or three weeks.
Prices are now about a dollar above a year ago. Last year prices moved on up at this time, but this year we’ve got more cattle coming to slaughter in November.
Weakness will probably set in sometime the early part of 1962 when there will be about 12 per cent more catttle coming to market off feed.
Planning note; an increasing number of fed cattle in the slaughter picture seems to be exerting a bigger influence on prices, particularly in the late winter and early spring markets.
Cattle on feed in 26 feeding states October 1 totaled about five and a half million head, up eight per cent from last year. In a break down by weights, cattle over 1,000 pounds were down three per cent in numbers from a year ago, 9001,099 pound cattle up six per cent, 700 to 899 pound cattle up 13 per cent, 500-699 pound cattle up five per cent, under 500 pounds up 18
