CORN
Corn prices brightened a little j when the USDA October 1 crop estimate showed virtually no increase over September, but prospects still are that season prices will be Very close to last year.
Bumper crops and a big carryover have brought total corn supplies to within three pef cent of last year.
Local ‘Eastern Virginia markets may show some strength in the next few weeks as local feed man-! ufacturers find that a good percentage of surplus corn that farmers used to sell is signed up as idle acres in the government grain program.
Virginia’s estimated production of corn this year is down 11 per cent from last year and North Carolina production is down 20 per cent. Most of the drop will probably come out of market corn, not corn for farm feeding.
Big question mark hanging over com prices is when and in what proportions the government will start unloading corn stocks.
Corn in Richmond last week was selling for $1.10, Norfolk $1.10 to $1.14, Northern Neck points $1.03 to $1.11, the Valley $1.25 to $1.30, and Chicago $1.13.
