Quarterly Meeting
The quarterly meeting of the Culpeper - Rappahannock -Warren iHeart Council was held May 22 in the library of Warren Me-' morial Hospital. Mrs. Albert War-1 rick, president of the Council presided. Mrs. Marguerite O. Huffman, Field Director, was present and along with Dr. Anthony Slewka, Director of Internal Medicine at Culpeper Hospital, discussed a plan for an educational program in our county. It is the hope of the Council that this can be started promptly.
Grateful acknowledgement was made for the bequest of Mr. John W. Derflinger. A check was received in the amount of $122.25 from the executor of his estate.
Dr. Slewka told the group that heart disease, the No. 1 Killer, accounts for 52.3% of all deaths in Virginia and for 54% of ^11 deaths in the United States. Diseases of the 'heart and circulation afflict millions of people now living in this country.
More than 1,300-scientists, aided by Heart Fund dollars, are waging the greatest fight in medial history to combat our greatest killer. Some of these scientists are researchers supported by Virginia Heart Association and its chapters at the Medical College of Virginia and the University of Virginia School of Medicine.
The information gained through research must be transmitted to physicians and nurses; rehabilitation of the heart and stroke patient must be understood; young persons should be encouraged to enter the field of research and public understanding of the heart problem must be promoted. All this is done through programs of your Heart Association and its chapters.
