Too many bulls ar$ seen with too many heifer calves of breeding age (5 mo.). You’ll be sorry' to have those under developed mothers around comes next summer not to mention the delivery problem or possible loss of a heifer. Calf sale consignors pledge a 20% to 33% refund, depending on which sale they consign to, but this is not all the cost by any means.
Just recently we had * letter from a good buyer who ran into the bred heifer problem stating about as follows: “I’m sorry to put in this second claim but you should sec the heifer now (die couldn’t deliver). The other heifers had done well and I like your calves. Was planning on coming back this fall but don’t know what I’ll do now that this has happened.”
Measure, if you can, the detriment to any sale in ioosing but one good buyer. He might buy but 20-25 head but in the process he probably bids on several lots.
DON’T FORGET THIS! And yes, if you are a bull owner, you should feel the responsibility in seeing that he stays put. Follow the good neighbor policy _the othdr. cowman across the fehce doesn’t want his heifer bred either.

I continue to be appalled at loose farm management practices. Why be a 99 per center whe| fts simple to gain that 1 % ?
Presently I have in mind breeders who let their heifers get 9-10 or 11 months old before vaccinating against Brucellosis. For 10-12 years we’ve been preaching to get this job done when the heifers are not less than 4 months old nor over 8 months of age. Why?
'If heifers are over 8 months of age some will retain a reaction to the Brucellosis test for several years. Most will “dear-up” by the time they are 3 or 4 years old. BUT, why let one or two months knock you out of consigning to a calf sale? Just one reactor and your hiefers are not eligible. FurContinued on page twelve
